Bulgaria’s unique climate and soil types are particularly beneficial for growing quality lavender for essential oil. In fact, Bulgaria is known to be the source of the world’s finest lavender, yielding an essential oil that is as rich in beneficial medicinal properties as it is in aroma.
The global market for essential oils is growing dynamically, driven by their ever-expanding application, growing demand and interest in natural products. The cultivation of lavender by the recent leader, France, has gone through years of problems with the spread of diseases and pests.
Since 2015 Bulgaria is a leader in the EU in the production and export of lavender oil. Continuous, quality breeding and improvement work with lavender is a guarantee for maintaining this position. Key markets are also the USA, China, the countries of the Middle East, Latin America, Australia and Canada.
According to industry estimates, 200-250 tonnes of lavender oil are produced in Bulgaria, which is almost entirely exported – through traders and from large producers directly. The main challenges are the rapid growth and entry of many new producers.
Bulgaria holds the first place on the world for the production of lavender oil, producing nearly 200 tons per year.
In recent years, the crops with the essential oil culture have reached 30 thousand decares.
